History
In 1910, Calais had more than 600 manufacturers and around 1,000 workshops that provided a livelihood for half the city’s population, or more than 40,000 workers. Our house, built at the very beginning of the 20th century, bears witness to the prosperous period when Calais was the world capital of lace.
Built in 1901, our house belonged to Luc Noyon, son of Lucien Noyon, founder of the lace manufacturing company Noyon Dentelle, one of the few lace factories still in existence today in Calais.
Lace remains inseparable from the history of the city.
The bedroom
The name of this “lodge” refers to the lace menders, inspectors, and scalers who, with their “little” hands and expert eyes, check for defects in the lace that has just come off the machines.
The industrial-chic room is located on the first floor. Upon entering, you will find a bathroom with a shower and a sink built into a sewing machine-style fixture, as well as a separate toilet.
You then enter a 12m² relaxation room where you can rest in peace and quiet. This room overlooks the courtyard, with a view of a lace factory.
You can help yourself to tea and coffee; a kettle is available on a sideboard.
Our old sewing machine serves as a desk. The connected flat-screen TV is in his separate bedroom with its double bed.
